The RE/MAX team in Regina, SK geared up for the annual Big Bike event, hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, on June 19, 2018. Returning for their second consecutive year, it was a beautiful day with temperatures of 25⁰C; perfect for the 4km trek around the scenic Wascana Lake. The team seemed to quite enjoy the themselves with a Hawaiian theme, sporting their most tropical looks complete with leis and fruit juice-filled coconuts. A full team this year, it included 29 members who rode on the bike, and thousands of dollars raised for such an important cause. In fact, the team’s goal for this year was $3,500 and they exceeded that goal by raising a total of $3,840.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada is dedicated to the education, prevention, and treatment of heart disease and stroke in Canadians. The prevalence of stroke, according to the Foundation, is approximately 365,000 men and 376,800 women annually. The funds raised from the event will be put towards research and innovation led by Dr. Michael Kelly of the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK, who has worked to standardize the level of care
(particularly for cases of stroke) in rural Saskatchewan. This ensures that for many who may have previously been delayed or prevented from receiving stroke treatment in rural areas, that the same level of care is administered to them as if they were in a larger urban area, like Regina or Saskatoon. This is crucial for the survivability of strokes, as the earlier one receives treatment, the better the chance of survival, and the greater reduction in long-term disability
from that stroke.
The RE/MAX team this year learned some valuable tips and tricks on reducing personal risk of heart disease and stroke, including: eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and living smoke-free. They even engaged in a compression-only CPR course, offered by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada’s volunteer team. Further information can be found available on the
